"7 Principles for Making Better Cities"- by Charles Montgomery
These principles were developed by the urbanist and writer, Charles Montgomery, in his book "Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design". The principles are:
MIX THE USES: Create mixed-use neighborhoods where people can live, work, and play in the same area.
MAKE IT WALKABLE: Design streets and public spaces that are safe and comfortable for pedestrians.
ENCOURAGE CYCLING: Provide bike lanes and infrastructure to encourage people to cycle.
BUILD A SENSE OF COMMUNITY: Foster a sense of community by designing public spaces and streets that encourage social interaction.
CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE: Design unique and distinctive public spaces and buildings that reflect the local culture and history.
SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES: Encourage the development of small and local businesses, rather than large chain stores.
PRIORITIZE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Invest in public transportation infrastructure to reduce car dependence and provide affordable and accessible transportation options for everyone.
These principles aim to create more sustainable, livable, and happy cities by prioritizing people's needs and well-being over cars and urban sprawl.
